Mohammed Polo has questioned the readiness of locally based players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that only one Ghana Premier League player merits a place in the Black Stars squad.
The former Ghana international singled out Benjamin Asare of Hearts of Oak as the only player worthy of selection, citing what he described as a sharp decline in the standard of the domestic league.
“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Polo told Connect FM. He lamented the overall quality of recent top-flight matches, referencing the Super Clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko as evidence of the league’s struggles.
Ghana, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.
The Black Stars will hold pre-tournament friendlies against Austria national football team and Germany national football team before a final warm-up against Mexico national football team. The squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the tournament.
