The Ministry of Education (MoE) has responded to concerns raised by members of the Ga and Adangbe communities over the exclusion of their language from a proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered educational tool being developed with Google.

On January 22, 2026, following a high-level engagement with Google officials, the sector minister, Haruna Iddrisu, announced that Ghana is deepening its use of indigenous languages in education and digital services, with Twi, Ewe, Dagbani, and Hausa set to be integrated into advanced AI tools.

This announcement sparked widespread condemnation from the Ga and Adangme communities, who described the exclusion of their language as discriminatory.

In a statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Minister for Education, the Ministry explained that using only four local languages is part of a pilot phase and does not reflect the final scope of the project.

According to the Ministry, the pilot phase is intended to test the effectiveness, adaptability, and educational impact of the technology before scaling it up nationwide.

“At no point is the pilot intended to marginalize or permanently exclude any linguistic or cultural group,” the statement said.

The Ministry stressed that the initiative is designed to be inclusive and assured that, after a successful pilot, the program will be expanded to include all 12 approved Ghanaian languages, including Ga and Adangme.

The Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to Ghana’s linguistic diversity and equitable access to education, particularly as emerging technologies are introduced to improve learning outcomes.
