Mistake NYC shooter Shane Tamura made that stopped him carrying out bloodbath at NFL: Live updates

By RACHEL BOWMAN and WILL POTTER

    Updated: 12:38 EDT, 29 July 2025

Authorities believe New York City gunman Shane Tamura was trying to target the NFL headquarters, but took the wrong elevator.

Tamura, 27, was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to several retired football players.

‘From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL headquarters,’ Mayor Eric Adams told CBS Mornings.

‘Instead, it took him to Rudin Management, and that is where he carried out additional shootings and took the lives of additional employees.’

Tamura traveled all the way from his home in Las Vegas in his black BMW, passing through Colorado on July 26 and making his way through New Jersey to Manhattan.

Chilling surveillance footage showed Tamura dressed in a sports coat and button-down shirt casually stroll into the building clutching an M4 rifle.

He killed four people, including an off-duty police officer, before turning the gun on himself on the skyscraper’s 33rd floor.

President Donald Trump called the shooter a ‘crazed lunatic’ who committed a ‘senseless act of violence’ on his ‘beloved’ native city.

Shooter missed NFL offices because he ‘took the wrong elevator’

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the Midtown Manhattan gunman missed the NFL office, which investigators believe was his intended target, because he got on the wrong elevator.

Shane Tamura, 27, was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after the rampage at 345 Park Avenue.

‘From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL headquarters,’ Adams told CBS Mornings.

‘Instead, it took him to Rudin Management, and that is where he carried out additional shootings and took the lives of additional employees.’

Tamura walked into the building around 6.30pm and opened fire, killing a police officer working a corporate security detail and then hitting a woman who tried to take cover as he sprayed the lobby with gunfire.

He then made his way to the elevator bank and shot a guard at a security desk, and shot another man in the lobby.

Tisch explained that Tamura then called for the elevator, which opened in the lobby.

‘A female exits that elevator and he allows her to walk past him unharmed,’ Tisch said.

Tamura took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor.

Tamura subsequently ended the massacre by taking his own life.

NYPD sending teams to Las Vegas in shooting investigation

Mayor Eric Adams told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that the New York Police Department is sending teams to Las Vegas as part of their Park Avenue shooting investigation.

‘We’re sending two teams to Las Vegas,’ Adams said. ‘One to execute a search warrant and the other to look at the two firearms and guns that were recovered.’

Authorities say Shane Tamura traveled all the way from his home in Las Vegas in his black BMW, passing through Colorado on July 26 and making his way through New Jersey to Manhattan.

He was then caught on chilling surveillance footage wearing a sport coat and button-down shirt while carrying an M4 rifle into the building, which houses the headquarters for the NFL.

Tamura was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

‘The motive appeared to be connected to the shooter’s belief that he was suffering from CTE and (a claim that) he was an ex-NFL player. Those items just don’t pan out. He never played for the NFL,’ Adams said.

‘We had a large number of bullets that were found in the car, but at this time, the investigation has not concluded that he was going to take more actions.’

Zohran Mamdani called out for anti-NYPD tweets after officer murdered in mass shooting

Democratic Socialist NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is expected to hold an event on Wednesday in response to the Midtown Manhattan mass shooting.

Mamdani, 33, issued a message from Uganda, where he is celebrating his wedding, after a gunman killed four people on Monday, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36.

‘Officer Didarul Islam was one of four people killed in yesterday’s horrific shooting. A Bangladeshi immigrant who joined the NYPD four years ago, he lived in Parkchester with his pregnant wife, their two young children, and his elderly parents,’ the mayoral hopeful said on Tuesday.

‘When he joined the police department, his mother asked him why he would pursue such a dangerous job. He told her it was to leave behind a legacy that his family could be proud of. He has done that, and more. I pray for him, his family, and honor the legacy of service and sacrifice he leaves behind.’

But the city council member was met with social media users reminding him of his past posts where he repeatedly spoke against police and asked to defund the NYPD.

In one particularly damning post, Mamdani said ‘nature was healing,’ when someone said they saw a police officer crying over the electoral win of Joe Biden in 2020.

Mamdani, who defeated former NYC governor in the Democratic primaries for mayor, denies being anti-police and calling for the NYPD to be defunded.

However, his social media activity serves as proof that he was unapologetically supportive of defunding the NYPD during the height of Black Lives Matter activism, in 2020.

    FBI aiding NYC shooting investigation

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced on X that the organization is assisting the NYPD in their investigation of Monday’s mass shooting.

‘The FBI is on scene at the Manhattan crime scene. The NYPD currently has the lead in this investigation. Our personnel are there to support their efforts. Motive is currently under investigation,’ he said.

Wesley LePatner remembered by UJA-Federation of New York

Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, 43, who was killed in Monday’s Midtown Manhattan shooting, was a beloved board member of the Jewish organization, the UJA-Federation of New York.

‘Wesley was extraordinary in every way — personally, professionally, and philanthropically,’ the organization said.

‘An exceptional leader in the financial world, she brought thoughtfulness, vision, and compassion to everything she did.

‘We mourn the loss of a life taken far too soon and extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband, Evan; her children; and her entire family.

‘May Wesley’s memory be for a blessing — and a lasting source of strength and inspiration.’

Shane Tamura worked as surveillance employee at Las Vegas hotel and casino

Shane Tamura was employed by the Horseshoe Las Vegas hotel and casino, a spokesperson confirmed to CNN.

‘We can confirm that Shane Devon Tamura was a surveillance department employee at Horseshoe Las Vegas,’ the spokesperson said.

‘Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragic event. We are cooperating with law enforcement and will not be commenting further.’

Gunman’s note claimed he had CTE

Shane Tamura, 27, was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), adegenerative brain disease linked to several retired football players.

The shooter wrote in pen a request to ‘study his brain’ and that ‘football gave me CTE,’ the New York Times reported.

Tamura was never an NFL player, but online records show he played football at his California high school and was a varsity player at a Los Angeles charter school until graduating in 2016, according to school sports databases.

The note found in his wallet said his football career was cut short by his brain injury, Bloomberg News reported.

One piece of paper had the words ‘my daily affirmations’ printed at the top. Another page had ‘plan, pause, reflect and flourish’ on it.

Attorney General’s office to assist with shooting investigation

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on X that her office will be helping local officials with their investigation.

‘Our US Attorney in New York Jay Clayton has set up a command post to assist with the shooting in New York City and local FBI agents are on the scene,’ she said.

Officer Didarul Islam, 33, was working security at the midtown office building when he was shot dead by 27-year-old Shane Tamura.

‘His father went last night to see him,’ Islam’s cousin told the New York Post. ‘When he heard the message he had a stroke, feeling bad. So he had a stroke so the hospital did not release him.’

The family also said that Islam’s pregnant wife was so distraught by Islam’s murder that she was taken to the hospital.

Security Officer Aland Etienne identified as fourth victim

Building service workers union 32BJ confirmed that security officer Aland Etienne was killed during Monday’s mass shooting.

‘We are devastated to hear the reports of the shooting at 345 Park Avenue. We extend our deep condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones tonight, including that of our own 32BJ SEIU security member Aland Etienne, a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously,’ the union said.

‘We have been in touch with Aland Etienne’s family, and are working with building management and the NYPD to support their investigation. We are ensuring our members in the building receive the free union counseling and support services they deserve and need to manage this unspeakable loss.

‘This tragedy speaks to the sacrifice of security officers who risk their lives every day to keep New Yorkers and our buildings safe. Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line. Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember him as such.’

NYC shooter had security card that did NOT allow him carry a firearm

Shane Tamura had a work card issued by the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board from 2019 to 2024 that did not authorize him to carry a firearm in his work capacity, NBC News reported.

Nevada security guards are under the jurisdiction of the Nevada Private Investigator’s Licensing Board, and are required to be registered and issued work cards.

It’s not clear what Tamura’s employment status was.

Shane Tamura’s high school football coach speaks out

New York City gunman Shane Tamura was a former high school football player at Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles in 2015 during his senior year.

His coach, Walter Roby, told FOX 11 he never saw any concerning signs from the athlete.

‘Shane was very quiet. He was a quiet, hard worker. He was coachable. So whatever we asked him to do, he was doing it. He led by, you know, his actions on the field. He was our, you know, one of my top offensive players at the time,’ Roby said.

‘Could I have done more? Could I help the kid? Could I have reached out to him or could you reach out to me? It’s just a lot of things I’m trying to process right now.’

Julia Hyman, who graduated from Cornell in 2020, was gunned down in the 33rd floor offices of her firm Rudin, where she worked as an associate.

KPMG closes 345 Park Avenue office on Tuesday

Audit and advisory firm KPMG said in a statement their office at 345 Park Avenue will be closed on Tuesday, after a shooting in the building on Monday evening that left four dead, including a Blackstone executive.

No KPMG employees were injured in the shooting, according to a post by Chair and CEO Tim Walsh and US Managing Principal Atif Zaim on the company’s LinkedIn page.

‘Our hearts are with the victims of this horrific act and their families, as well as all of our neighbors in 345 Park. This was a terrible, tragic, and frightening event,’ the statement said.

‘We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement. At this time, we are not aware of any significant physical injuries to our KPMG colleagues.’

NFL commissioner addresses employees after shooting

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo to staff Tuesday that ‘all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for,’ following the shooting at the league’s headquarters in Manhattan.

‘One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition,’ Goodell said in a memo obtained by ESPN.

‘NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family. We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared.’

Goodell praised the swift law enforcement response and honored the NYPD officer who was killed in the attack.

Employees in New York were instructed to work remotely Tuesday or take the day off, he said, and additional security will be in place.

‘Every one of you is a valued member of the NFL family. We will get through this together,’ Goodell said.

Eric Adams reveals second weapon was found near shooting scene

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Tuesday that an additional weapon was found in a car that was parked outside the shooting scene.

‘We found an additional weapon in that car that was parked outside at this time,’ he said.

The mayor explained that investigators are thoroughly searching 345 Park Avenue for any additional weapons.

‘We have reason to believe that he was focused on the NFL agency that was located in the building. And we’re going to continue to investigate with our federal partners to ensure that we can find a reason and identify any other weapons,’ he said.

‘And just really hats off to the men and women of the New York City police department and our partners for immediately going into the building, going floor by floor, doing the search, looking for any incendiary devices to conduct a very thorough investigation.’

Los Angeles Police Department investigating links to Shane Tamura

The Los Angeles Police Department is probing whether the department had any connections to NYC gunman Shane Tamura.

An LAPD spokesperson told NBC News that online rumors and media inquiries suggesting such a connection prompted an investigation.

‘We take these matters seriously and are actively investigating the information,’ the spokesperson said. ‘At this time, we are working to confirm details and gather the facts.’

A classmate said that Tamura played football at Granada Hills Charter School in LA in 2015 during his senior year.

Barstool boss Dave Portnoy launched a fundraiser for the New York City police officer who was killed during Monday night’s mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan.

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was shot in the back and killed by a gunman seen carrying an M4 assault rifle near a midtown Manhattan office building that houses Blackstone asset management and the NFL.

Islam, an officer since December 2021, is the father of two young boys. His wife is eight months pregnant with their third child.

Portnoy’s emotional social media message states he will match any proceeds Barstool makes from its ‘Back The Blue’ gear and donate it to the Islam family.

Added to the ‘Back The Blue’ design in the aftermath of the mass shooting is Islam’s name and precinct on the right sleeve.

‘Another tragic story that hits very close to home,’ Portnoy said. ‘Not only is Barstool’s HQ in NYC but this attack occurred in the same office the Brady 4 held our protest.

‘It’s never good having to do these charity drives but Officer Didarul Islam leaves behind 2 boys and an 8 months pregnant wife. I will personally match all proceeds we make this week and donate directly to the family.’

NY governor calls on Congress to pass assault weapons ban

New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement demanding that Congress pass a national assault weapons ban after a gunman carrying an M4 rifle killed four people in a Manhattan skyscraper.

‘Yesterday, New York lost four innocent lives in a horrific act of violence. Among them was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 3 1/2-year veteran who leaves behind a wife eight months pregnant and two young sons. My heart is with his loved ones, his NYPD family and every victim of this tragedy,’ she said.

‘The killer used an AR-15–style assault rifle. The same weapon of war used in mass shootings across America.

‘New York has some of the strongest gun laws in the nation. We banned assault weapons. We strengthened our Red Flag Law. We closed dangerous loopholes. But our laws only go so far when an AR-15 can be obtained in a state with weak gun laws and brought into New York to commit mass murder.

‘The time to act is now. The American people are tired of thoughts and prayers. They deserve action. Congress must summon the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and finally pass a national assault weapons ban before more innocent lives are stolen.’

Blackstone’s Manhattan offices closed on Tuesday

Investment firm Blackstone closed its Manhattan offices on Tuesday after a gunman killed four people at its headquarters at 345 Park Avenue, sources told the New York Times.

The company also has offices at 601 Lexington Avenue.

Wesley LePatner, a 43 year-old senior managing director at the investment giant, was among the vicitms.

‘We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePatner, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue. Words cannot express the devastation we feel,’ the company said in a statement.

Andrew Cuomo honors NYPD officer killed in shooting

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo – who is now running for NYC mayor as an independent – posted on social media honoring the NYPD officer who was killed on Monday.

‘Officer Didarul Islam’s courage was as boundless as his love for this city. He gave his life protecting New Yorkers. A hero,’ he said.

‘We honor his sacrifice and the quiet bravery of every NYPD officer who stands the watch so we can live free.’

    What is CTE?

NYC gunman Shane Tamura, 27, was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after the rampage at 345 Park Avenue.

CTE is a degenerative brain disease that is caused by repeated hits to the head. Over time, these hits result in the accumulation of tau protein around the brain, which can lead to confusion, depression and eventually dementia.

There have been several retired football players who have come forward with brain diseases, many of whom attribute their condition to the game.

More than 1,800 former athletes and military veterans have pledged to donate their brains to the Concussion Legacy Foundation for CTE research.

CTE was usually associated with boxing before former NFL players began revealing their conditions.

Several notable players who committed suicide were posthumously diagnosed with the disease, such as Junior Seau and Aaron Hernandez.

CNN anchor Erin Burnett described NYC shooter as ‘possibly white’

Erin Burnett was blasted on social media for describing the gunman who killed four people in Midtown Manhattan as ‘possibly white’ despite surveillance footage showing he was not.

While discussing images of shooter Shane Tamura walking into the 345 Park Avenue skyscraper, Burnett said, ‘They do know what he looks like, male, possibly white, mustache, sunglasses.’

Former NFL player Terry Long was named in a suicide note by Shane Tamura, the gunman targeting NFL headquarters when he opened fire on Monday evening at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan.

Long was born in South Carolina and played at college level for the East Carolina Pirates from 1980 until 1983.

He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers as a guard throughout his seven-year career, which ended in 1991.

That year, he was suspended for violating the NFL’s steroid policy and attempted suicide.

Long died when he was 45 in June 2005, commiting suicide by drinking antifreeze, a revised 2006 death certificate said – a coroner initially ruled that he died of meningitis.

Long was found unresponsive at his home and died in hospital and was later diagnosed with CTE.

In the months before Long’s suicide, he was also facing legal issues.

‘I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love,’ Trump wrote on social media Tuesday.

‘I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence.’

Craig Clementi was on the phone with other NFL employees when he was struck in the back with a bullet allegedly shot by Shane Tamura on Sunday evening, New York Times reporter Dianna Russini revealed on X.

Clementi, who just recently welcomed a new baby, was able to tell his colleagues to evacuate the building and to stay safe.

The new dad continued to make calls while he received medical attention and was taken to the hospital via ambulance, Russini said. He is in stable condition.

NYC Mayor orders flags lowered to half-staff

Mayor Eric Adams ordered all flags on city buildings to be lowered to half-staff to honor the victims of Monday’s mass shooting.

‘As a mark of respect for the memory of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam who died in the line of duty and the multiple victims of the mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan at 345 Park Avenue yesterday, I’ve ordered all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-staff until further notice,’ he said.

How did the NYC shooting unfold?

Authorities say Shane Tamura traveled all the way from his home in Las Vegas in his black BMW, passing through Colorado on July 26 and making his way through New Jersey to Manhattan.

He was then caught on chilling surveillance footage wearing a sport coat and button-down shirt while carrying an M4 rifle into the building, which houses the headquarters for the NFL.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the footage showed him entering the building’s lobby before turning right and opening fire on the police officer

‘He then shoots a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeds through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire,’ she said.

‘He makes his way to the elevator bank where he shoots a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk.’

Tisch explained that Tamura then called for the elevator which opened in the lobby.

‘A female exits that elevator and he allows her to walk past him unharmed,’ Tisch said.

Tamura took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor.

The man then shot himself in the chest, the commissioner said.

NYPD pays tribute to Officer Didarul Islam killed in shooting

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was shot in the back and killed during Monday’s mass shooting.

The New York City Police Department paid tribute to the young cop in a social media post.

‘Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department,’ the NYPD said on X.

‘He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.’

The man who unleashed chaos inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday afternoon has been identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old licensed private investigator from Las Vegas who once dreamed of a life in football.

Authorities say Tamura, who had a ‘documented mental health history’, arrived in Manhattan by car on Monday afternoon following a mammoth cross-country trip.

He was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Officials say he had no criminal background but his past raises haunting questions.

Tamura grew up in Hawaii and was immersed in a life dominated by sports.

Gunman may have intended to shoot up NFL headquarters but ‘went to wrong floor’, Mayor Adams says

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said that the shooter may have intended to go to the NFL offices at 345 Park Avenue but ‘got off at the wrong floor.’

‘There are two different elevator banks,’ Adams said on Good Day New York.

‘Some banks don’t go to every floor. He appeared to have gone to the wrong bank, and he ended up on the floor of Rudin Management.’

A Blackstone executive was among those killed by gunman Shane Tamura, 27, in midtown Manhattan on Monday.

Tamura also shot dead an unnamed security guard who tried to take cover behind a security desk, as well as an unidentified woman who tried to hide behind a lobby pillar.

The Blackstone executive, who was named as Wesley LaPatner, was killed in the lobby, according to the Wall Street Journal which reported that other Blackstone employees are in the hospital receiving treatment.

The shooting took place at a skyscraper that is home to the headquarters of both the NFL and Blackstone, one of the world’s largest investment firms, as well as other tenants.

After spraying bullets in the lobby, the gunman took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where real-estate management firm Rudin Management is based, and killed another person before turning the gun on himself.

The Rudin family – a New York real estate dynasty – owns the building.

After the shooting, images emerged of Blackstone employees used desks and couches to barricade themselves inside to hide from the massacre.

Investigators said that it is possible gunman Shane Tamura, 27, was targeting the National Football League, which is located at 345 Park Avenue.

He was found with a letter on his body indicating he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after the rampage.

In the note he railed against the NFL and pleaded for his brain to be studied.

‘Terry Long football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,’ Tamura wrote, according to CNN. ‘You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you.’

The shooter was referring to former Pittsburgh Steeler Terry Long, who committed suicide by drinking antifreeze in 2006 after suffering from CTE.

‘Study my brain please I’m sorry Tell Rick I’m sorry for everything,’ the note read.

Cops descend on gunman’s Nevada home

Cops have descended on gunman Shane Tamura’s home in Desert Shores, Nevada, where he reportedly lived with his parents.

Tamura was reportedly a promising football player in his youth in the area, with cops looking into whether he may have targeted the NFL headquarters in a revenge plot.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference that Tamura drove his BMW from the home to Manhattan on Monday to carry out the shooting.

She said that the car had been detectged by license plate readers in Colorado on Saturday and then in New Jersey on Saturday around 4:30pm.
