Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged politicians to refrain from politicising the issue of the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers and instead focus on addressing its root cause.

He stated that the more the missing ECG container saga is politicised, the deeper systemic inefficiencies in state institutions become.

Speaking on the ongoing controversy surrounding the missing ECG containers on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Afenyo-Markin said, “People often see things in a very radioactive state, all because it has taken a partisan twist. I am saying that we can do better as politicians. Let us look at the root cause, solve that problem. Don’t let us say, ‘It is an NPP problem; they caused it.’”

He added, “The more we continue to do that, the more the system continues to cave in. We shouldn’t be so comfortable.”

The Minority Leader also asserted that structural inefficiencies in some State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) negatively impact the government.

To address this issue, he said, “I believe that we should use this matter to tackle it comprehensively and get all hands on deck. It doesn’t matter which party is in power.”

Afenyo-Markin assured the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor of the NPP’s commitment to overhauling the ECG to make it more efficient.

His comment comes after a report that over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cannot be accounted for at the Tema Port.

Chairman of the investigative committee, Prof Innocent Senyo Acquah, noted that while ECG claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment, an independent audit at the port found only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,357 missing.
