Dennis Miracles Aboagye, aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has leveled accusations of selective reporting against the current government regarding the state of Ghana’s endangered water bodies in its ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as “Galamsey.”

In a post on his X on October 3, 2025, Aboagye claimed the government is deliberately ignoring data on the majority of water bodies tracked by the Water Resources Commission (WRC).

“Water Resources Commission has been tracking 41 Water bodies in Ghana since 2005 till date. The NDC Government displays 6 water bodies and ignores the 35 water bodies because they are in a worst situation and is asking for praises?” Aboagye wrote.

Can the Blue Water Guards rescue Ghana’s polluted water bodies?

The aide suggested the government’s approach of highlighting only a few improved rivers while suppressing data on others creates a false narrative of progress.

He accused the NDC administration of mounting pressure on themselves about some progress they claim they are making even in the face of contrary facts.

According to Aboagye, the decision to show only six water bodies has “invite[d] others to prove to you, that out of the 41 water bodies being tracked by the water resources commission, 35 of them are in a worst situation now than in the past and that is why you refuse to show the data.”

Citing a specific example, he claimed that the Central region is in crisis, stating, “the turbidity level in the Ayensu River has risen from 14,000 NTU in 2024 to 94,000 NTU as at now. Why isn’t that part of the rivers you displayed today. Where is the data for the rest of the 35 water bodies.”

Furthermore, the aide challenged the government’s use of turbidity levels as the sole indicator of water health.

“Water turbidity levels are not the measure for water quality. The true measure of water quality is the WATER QUALITY index which uses turbidity levels, Nutrients and two other elements to determine the purity of the water levels,” he stressed.

Aboagye slammed the government’s efforts as “propaganda,” stating, “The attempt by this government to use 6 water bodies out of 41 to gaslight the entire country is not only laughable but unnecessary.”

Concluding his post with a strong political demand, he urged the government to take concrete action against illegal mining: “Stop buying the Galamsey gold. Stop your party people from doing Galamsey. Fulfil your galamsey campaign promise. Stop the whining and blame games and fix the menace #galamseyEnablers #galamseyevidence.”
