THE Mion District Assembly on Tuesday distributed assorted items and cash totalling GH¢398,592.35 to 122 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the district, drawn from their share of the PWDs District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

The support, which reflected the personal choices of beneficiaries, included refrigerators, industrial knitting machines, grinding mills, television sets, rice processing machines, soap-making tools, as well as small ruminants such as goats and sheep. Some beneficiaries also received cash grants for school fees ranging from GH¢2,000 to GH¢11,500.

Speaking at a brief ceremony in Sang, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Mion, Mr Azindow Hamzah Moabalyn, said the intervention stemmed from the statutory three per cent allocation of the DACF earmarked to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of PWDs through income-generating activities, educational support, and medical assistance.

“This initiative is part of the assembly’s commitment to ensure that no one is left behind in the march towards a prosperous Mion District and beyond. The DACF remains a cornerstone of our social intervention programmes,” Mr Moabalyn stated.

He mentioned that the allocation was aimed at promoting inclusivity and fostering self-reliance among vulnerable groups. He emphasised that the support would provide beneficiaries with ready sources of income, directly boosting household earnings and enhancing food security.

“We expect this intervention to have a profound impact on household incomes, job creation, health outcomes, food security, and overall economic vitality in the district, ultimately reducing poverty and fostering self-reliance,” he underlined.

The Member of Parliament for Mion Constituency, Alhaji Misbaw Adam Mahama, praised the assembly for the initiative, underlining the government’s commitment to the welfare of PWDs.

He explained that the selection process was transparent, merit-based, and community-driven, involving the District Social Welfare and Community Development Department, Assembly Members, Traditional Authorities, and PWD associations to ensure that the most vulnerable and deserving individuals were prioritised.

Alhaji Mahama then urged beneficiaries to see the Disability Allocation of the Common Fund as a means to ease burdens on their families, friends, and society.

He further assured that his office would continue collaborating with local and international organisations to create more opportunities for PWDs in the district.

“Such initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to grassroots development across the district and beyond,” he indicated.
