All 87 members of the minority caucus in parliament yesterday, March 19, 2026, voted against the Barari DV Ghana lithium mining agreement, citing unaddressed concerns.
However, the motion was passed by the majority in parliament voted yes on the agreement.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, told the House that his entire caucus could not support the ratification of the lease for lithium and mineral extraction at Mankessim.
He emphasised that the vote by all 87 members was en bloc, rejecting the agreement.
“We cannot be part of this. Therefore, Mr. Speaker, we vote en bloc in rejecting this,” he said during the parliamentary debate, noting that the concerns of experts had not been addressed.
He insisted that the caucus’s position be formally recorded to signal its opposition to the agreement for public and parliamentary records.
Despite the minority’s unified opposition, the motion was adopted after the majority voted in favor.
The agreement grants Barari DV Ghana the right to extract lithium and other minerals in the Mankessim area.
