Former Nigerian footballer Mikel Obi has chastised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta over his inability to win a major trophy for the club after six years.

He stated that the Spanish coach has not achieved the success expected of him, such as winning major trophies like the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, or any other European trophy.

The former Chelsea midfielder expressed his disappointment in Arteta for failing to clinch a substantial title despite spending about €700 million to buy players and build the team.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, Obi called on Arteta to improve his team to win titles; otherwise, his job might be in danger if the situation remains the same in the 2025/2026 season.

“It’s about winning trophies. Yes, he got close, but he didn’t get them over the line. It’s the same thing. He always comes second. It’s always ‘next season’ for Arsenal. Now we’re talking again about next season, he wants to spend again in the summer.

“He’s actually spent €700 million to €800 million. That’s a lot of money over six years. So he has no excuses. For somebody who’s been there for that long and spent so much money and just won one FA Cup trophy, that’s not good enough,” he said.

The Arsenal manager has come under heavy backlash after going trophyless in the 2024/2025 season, losing the Premier League title to Liverpool and getting eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League.

Following his appointment as Arsenal coach in 2019, Arteta has won one FA Cup trophy and two Community Shield titles.
