Nigerian football legend John Mikel Obi has shared a fascinating story about how José Mourinho’s wise counsel helped him stay grounded during his early days at Chelsea.
Mikel joined Chelsea from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo in 2006 and spent 11 successful years at Stamford Bridge. Like many young footballers, he was eager to enjoy his newfound wealth and excitement. After receiving his first paycheck, he decided to splurge on a Range Rover.
However, his then-manager, José Mourinho, quickly intervened, advising him to return the luxury car and opt for a more modest Mini Cooper instead.
Reflecting on Mourinho’s influence, Mikel acknowledged the role the Portuguese coach played in shaping his career.
“When I got my first salary at Chelsea, I bought a Range Rover. He (José Mourinho) saw it and told me to return it. He told me to get a Mini Cooper. José Mourinho made me who I am today,” Mikel revealed.
Under Mourinho’s guidance, Mikel won the FA Cup and League Cup in his first season and gradually became a key figure at Chelsea.
During his time at the club, he won the Premier League, Europa League, and the UEFA Champions League, cementing his legacy as one of Chelsea’s most reliable midfielders.
