Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe, has been hospitalised for an acute case of gastroenteritis, the Spanish club said Thursday.

According to L’Équipe, Xabi Alonso previously reported that Mbappé had been kept in complete isolation in his hotel room to avoid infecting other team members.

Gastroenteritis is an inflammatory disease of the stomach and small intestine caused by infections and bacteria such as E. coli and others.

Real Madrid released an official statement, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, confirming the hospitalisation.

“Our player Kylian Mbappé is experiencing an acute case of gastroenteritis and have been hospitalised to undergo medical tests and receive appropriate treatment,” the statement said.

This development follows his absence from both training and the matchday squad, with the club initially attributing it to a fever.

Mbappé did not play in Madrid’s 1-1 tie against Al Hilal on June 18 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, due to a feverish condition reported the day before.

At the time, the decision to sideline him was framed as a precaution, and Gonzalo García, a youth team standout, started in his place.

Currently, there is no information about the player’s condition, and the timeline for his recovery remains unknown, which is a major concern for both fans and the Real Madrid coaching staff.

The club has made it clear that his full recovery is the priority, and no decisions regarding his return to play will be made until his health improves significantly.

His status for the remaining group stage matches is currently in doubt.
