The Mayor of Nima, Abdul Fatawu Alhassan, has joined hands with UK-based entrepreneur Amirah Issah to distribute free sanitary pads to women and girls at the Maamobi General Hospital, Nima Clinic and surrounding communities as part of an effort to address menstrual health challenges in the area.

The gesture brought relief to many beneficiaries, particularly students and low-income women who struggle to afford sanitary products due to rising costs.

At Maamobi General Hospital, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer Josephine Dampson expressed appreciation for the visit, noting that many health-care needs within the community extend beyond what the hospital is able to provide.

“Not everything that we need will be provided, so if people come around to help, it’s of great importance to us,” she said.

Dampson highlighted recurring challenges faced by women and girls who frequently rely on the facility for assistance during their menstrual periods.

She noted that support from community partners helps ease pressure on families who cannot consistently afford basic hygiene supplies.

The distribution forms part of a broader community-led initiative aimed at improving menstrual hygiene awareness and reducing barriers that cause girls to miss school or women to miss work during their periods.

Amiratu Issah, who doubles as the CEO of Vend Luxe in London, said the high cost of sanitary pads in Ghana motivated her to support local women. She emphasised that menstruation is a natural part of life and should not become a source of hardship.

She added that many women experience physical discomfort during their cycle and lacking sanitary products can compound these challenges.

The Mayor of Nima, who joined the team during visits across Nima and Maamobi, said the support complements wider community-based interventions aimed at improving public health and assisting vulnerable residents.

The initiative has so far reached multiple locations across the Nima–Maamobi area, with organizers expressing willingness to extend their outreach as community needs evolve.
