Mathias Ashitey, the 2025 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Boxer of the Year, says he is determined to retain the prestigious title and is intensifying his training ahead of upcoming competitions.
In an interview following the Ghana Boxing Federation 2026 National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship, Ashitey—who was named the best boxer at the tournament—said he remains focused and humble despite his recent success. He praised the federation’s president, Dauda Fuseni, and the executive board for organizing a successful championship.
The Kinbu SHS visual arts student also acknowledged the support of his club, Black Panthers Boxing Club, and his coach Ebenezer Adjei, popularly known as “Killer,” whose guidance he credited for his progress.
Ashitey also appealed to boxing fans to remain calm during bouts, emphasizing that officials ensure fair officiating at events.
Looking ahead, the talented boxer has set his sights on winning gold at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as he continues his rise in Ghana’s amateur boxing scene.
