Abdullah Mason edged out Sam Noakes in an absolute war to win the vacant WBO lightweight title in Riyadh tonight. The fight was a back and forth battle of KO artists. Just when one man seemed to have things going his way, the other would take charge. Noakes was cut early from a clash of heads and it appeared for a time that it might cause the fight to end. But Noakes’ team did a great job in preventing the cut from getting worse, allowing the fight to go on.
When it appeared Mason was not going to be able to stop his foe, his corner implored him to box and make the fight easier. Mason would heed the advice momentarily, but then go back to war! Noakes deserves huge credit for not going down and battling all the way to the finish. The final scores were 117-111 and 115-113 twice, all for Mason, now 20-0, 17 KOs. The beaten but unbowed Noakes loses his first at 17-1, 15 KOs.
