Former French international Marcel Desailly has shared that eliminating alcohol and partying were key factors that contributed to his successful career.
The former World Cup winner emphasised that he avoided weekends out, hanging out with friends, and sleeping late to maintain discipline.
Speaking during an interview with his niece, Christine Kludje, on YouTube, the former footballer asserted that his teenage years were the most challenging because he had to set the foundation for his career.
“Probably the most difficult time was my teenage years when there were no weekends, no hanging around with friends, no alcohol, and no sleeping late. There was a lot of discipline, so that period was key for me to be able to make it,” he said.
“Once you make it, it is another matter. You need to have consistency and there are responsibilities.”
Marcel Desailly, born Odenke Abbey, had a 20-year professional career, playing for reputable clubs such as Olympique Marseille, AC Milan, and Chelsea.
In his international career, he made 116 appearances for the French national team.
Desailly won the UEFA Champions League twice, the UEFA Euros, and the FIFA World Cup, along with other trophies, including Serie A, Supercoppa Italiana, FIFA Confederations Cup, European Super Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.
He is regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history.
