Ghanaian musician and media personality Deborah Vanessa, popularly known as Sister Derby, has set tongues wagging online following a controversial statement likening marriage to prostitution.

Appearing on the Yoofi Unfiltered podcast to discuss feminism and the African family structure, Sister Derby claimed that the traditional concept of marriage, especially in African traditional settings, is similar to prostitution due to the payment of ‘bride price’ by the man.

“Do you know that marriage is a form of prostitution? You pay a bride price; you pay for her [sic] for life,” she said.

On the topic of prostitution, Sister Derby added that the occupation only lasts as long as there is a market for it.

“Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world, and guess who patronises it? It’s men. If men stopped paying for sex, there would be no prostitution. It is all on the man,” she added.

Her remarks have sparked a flood of reactions across social media platforms.

Many users have slammed the comments as disrespectful and misleading, especially within a culture where bride price is considered a symbol of respect and commitment.
