Marcus Luther won a silver medal at the World Boxing Cup – Stage 2 in Guiyang, China, last month (June 15–21) in the 65-kilogram division (welterweight), marking his first international medal in the Elite Division.

“It was a great overall experience for me. You never aim for the silver medal; you always want the gold, but after two tournaments and two losses and no medals, the silver medal felt like a step forward for me,” said Luther, who has won 19 national championships. “It also showed that I am competing with the best and beating the best.”

Luther went 4-1 at the World Boxing Cup – Stage 2 over six days. He recorded three unanimous decisions and a split decision, including a victory over Brazil’s Yuri Falcao, who won a silver medal at the 2025 World Boxing Championships and is ranked third in the world in the 65-kilogram division. Luther lost to France’s Hugo Grau in the final.

“Winning a silver medal at the World Boxing Cup – Stage 2 is the biggest accomplishment for me as an amateur fighter because I am fighting some of the best boxers in the world, and it is difficult to get into the medal rounds at this elite level,” said the 19-year-old southpaw from Washington, D.C.

He is ranked first in the United States and eighth in the world in his weight class. Luther was selected to the 2026 USA Boxing Men’s Elite High Performance Team after a month-long camp at the beginning of the year (January 11–February 11) at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“It was a great experience. I was super excited to make the USA Boxing Men’s Elite High Performance Team,” Luther said. “It means I am one step closer to my end goal of making the United States Olympic Boxing Team and winning a gold medal in 2028 [the Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles, California, from July 14 to July 30, 2028].”

Luther lost extremely close split decisions in the round of 16 in his first two international tournaments this year—the prestigious 77th International Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, in February, and the World Boxing Cup – Stage 1 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, in April. He won one fight in each of those tournaments.

“These two tournaments were the first time I fought in the Elite Division, in the ring without headgear, and against grown men, so it has taken me some time to get adjusted to fighting at this higher level of competition,” Luther said.

He trains for most of the year at the Alexandria Boxing Club in Alexandria, Virginia, with his father, William Luther Sr., who also trains his older brother, William Jr., who has 24 amateur bouts and reached the semifinals of the 2022 USA Boxing National Championships. Undefeated WBO/NABO middleweight champion and 2020 Olympian Troy Isley (16-0, 6 KOs) also trains at the gym and spars with Luther.

“My dad and older brother are my role models because they are both the reason I am in the sport of boxing. My brother wanted to box, so I did as well, and my dad trained both of us,” said Luther, who started boxing at age six and began competing as an amateur two years later. “My dad and I work well together, and they both help make me a better boxer.”

Luther’s last international boxing tournament of the year will be the Pan-American Elite Continental Championships in Puebla, Mexico, in October, where he hopes to win a gold medal.

“I am currently training with my teammates in Colorado Springs,” Luther said. “Later in the summer, I will travel back home to train with my father for a few weeks, and then head back to Colorado Springs to finish my training camp before the tournament.”

He holds an outstanding amateur record of 127-13. Luther went three and a half years, from July 2022 to February 2026, with just one loss—a unanimous decision to fellow USA Boxing Men’s Elite High Performance team member Salim Ellis-Bey at the 2024 USA Boxing National Championships.

During this dominant run, he won the USA Boxing National Championships, USA Boxing National Junior Olympics and Summer Festival, National Golden Gloves, and the USA Boxing International Open, all last year. Luther won the 2023 and 2024 USA Boxing National Junior Olympics and Summer Festival. He also finished first at the USA Boxing National Championships from 2020 to 2023. In many of these tournaments, he was named the Most Outstanding Boxer.

Luther is one of the more popular United States amateur fighters, drawing large crowds, sometimes numbering in the thousands, to his bouts at national events. His fast hand speed and explosive punching power have led to stoppage victories, which are rare in the amateur ranks, with fewer than 10% of bouts ending by stoppage. Luther’s latest knockout victory came against Turkey’s Yigit Us at the International Strandja Memorial Tournament in February, when the referee stopped the bout seconds before the end of the second round.

He has been so dominant throughout his amateur career because he can do it all in the ring, largely thanks to his ring IQ, which is well beyond his years. Luther’s ring IQ allows him to adapt and adjust quickly as a fight progresses and turn the bout into the fight he wants it to be, whether that means boxing or banging, fighting on the outside or inside, and landing his power punches where they need to be.

During his amateur career, Luther has beaten several elite fighters, including Thomas Covington, an eight-time national champion; fellow USA Boxing Men’s Elite High Performance team member Joseph Awinongya Jr.; and Ellis-Bey, against whom he split a pair of bouts. He also faced current undefeated professional super lightweight prospect Curmel Moton (9-0, 7 KOs), against whom he went 1-2.

Luther has gained invaluable fighting experience by sparring with several elite undefeated professional boxers, including WBC/WBO super lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) and former WBO lightweight titleholder Keyshawn Davis (15-0, 10 KOs), as well as unbeaten lightweight and welterweight prospects Deric “Scooter” Davis (12-0, 10 KOs) and Maximus Garland (9-0, 7 KOs), respectively. He has also sparred with tough veterans Sulaiman Segawa (18-6-1, 7 KOs), a featherweight, and Mykal Fox (26-5, 5 KOs), a super welterweight.

“Sparring is a really good experience for me to be in the ring with fighters like Stevenson and Davis, who are where I want to be. It shows me that there are levels in this sport. I have a long journey ahead of me. Still, it is a bright future,” said Luther, who has also sparred with his fellow USA Boxing Men’s Elite High Performance teammates Lorzeno Patricio, Lavant Brownlee, and even Awinongya Jr., who fights as a heavyweight. “They taught me if you want to be the best, you need a work ethic to get to this level. You need to train at a certain level. You need to work really hard and study to get to where they are.”

“Keep supporting me and coming along for the ride with me all the way to the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 because I will be the next American superstar and gold medalist from Washington, D.C.,” Luther said.
