A man’s body has been pulled from a river as police launch a probe into his ‘unexplained’ death.

Police officers were called to the River Wensum, near the Novi Sad Friendship Bridge, in Norwich at 4.26am on Saturday.

Emergency services, including the fire brigade and ambulances, attended the scene and pulled a man in his 40s from the water.

He was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital but died shortly after.

The force said his death is being treated as unexplained and have informed his next of kin.

The man is described as being Asian, of slim build and was around 5ft 9in tall.

He was wearing a black North Face puffer jacket and a pair of black trousers.

He was also wearing a distinctive wide brimmed hat and was carrying a large black holdall.

Police are now investigating the incident to establish how or why the man entered the water.

They are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch.

Norfolk Police said: ‘Anyone who may have been in the Riverside area of Norwich in the early hours of yesterday and who may have seen anything, or who has relevant dashcam or footage is asked to contact Norfolk Police via any of the following channels quoting CAD 53 of 11th January.’

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
