A manhunt has been launched for two women and a man who fled the scene of a hit-and-run crash near Edinburgh Airport that left a man dead.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the four-vehicle smash on the A8 Glasgow Road near Newbridge at 9.25am on Monday.

Officers received reports of a crash involving a grey Mercedes A250, a black Renault Captur, a grey Skoda Karoq and a grey Hyundai i30.

The 58-year-old driver of the Hyundai i30 was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four others were taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

Two women and a man from the Mercedes fled the scene on foot before officers arrived, with specialist resources deployed to hunt the trio down.

Both sniffer dogs and helicopters were used in search efforts on Monday.

The A8 remained closed as the investigation continued and was reopened at 7pm.

    The vehicles have been recovered.

Police launched an appeal for information on Tuesday as the search for the two women and man who fled the scene continues.

Inspector Thomas Mallinson said: ‘My thoughts are with the family of the person who died at this incredibly difficult time.

‘Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash, and it is vital we trace the three people who left the area before police arrived.

‘I am appealing for anyone who witnessed it or who has information which could assist our investigation to contact us.

‘I would also ask anyone who was in the area and may have dash-cam footage to please get in touch if it holds anything which could be relevant.’

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and quote reference 0756.
