An unemployed man who stole a laptop from the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Foster Nyarko, a 36-year-old man, went to the Ministry seeking a cleaning job.

He pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing a laptop valued at GHC24,745 before an Accra Circuit Court.

The court presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, sentenced Nyarko to one year for unlawful entry and two years for stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The prosecution revealed that Nyarko had previously been jailed for stealing a mobile phone at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice earlier this year while on a job hunt.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, a lawyer at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, reported the theft, stating that Nyarko, who resides at Opera Square in Accra, visited the Ministry on December 4, 2024, in search of a cleaning job.

He was directed to see the Human Resource Director but instead proceeded to the second floor, where he entered the office of the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation.

Upon finding the office unoccupied, Nyarko took advantage of the situation and stole an HP laptop computer valued at GHC24,745, further concealed the laptop in his backpack and left the premises.

Investigations led to Nyarko’s arrest, and he admitted to the offence. He confessed to selling the stolen laptop to an unidentified person in Takoradi.
