A man in Kenya has been charged with the murder of a Scottish businessman whose body was found dumped in a sack of pineapples.

Appearing on Tuesday at Makadara High court via video link, Alex Mutua denied killing Campbell Scott, 58, who was found dead in a forest in February after he went missing in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

Mr Scott, from Dunfermline, Fife, was discovered by local herders with his hands and feet tied to a sack of pineapples.

Mr Mutua is accused of committing the violent murder alongside other suspects, who did not appear before the court.

Prosecution lawyers have filed an affidavit opposing bail, and the court instructed them to submit the affidavit within three days formally.

Mr Scott been in the African nation for a business meeting before his gruesome murder.

It comes months after a fugitive suspect wanted for murder of the businessman stabbed himself to death while on the run.

Following the death of Mr Scott, Kenyan police launched a manhunt with Samuel Musembi being one of the suspects law enforcers were searching for.

Mr Musembi is believed to have stabbed himself multiple times after he first attempted to poison himself back in March, the Kenyan publication Nation reported.

He was believed to have been in hiding at a friend’s house who was unaware of what he had done.

Once he learnt of his crime he reported him to the police, before discovering him unconscious on the bed.

He was rushed to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Other suspects still on the run are Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, alias Edu, and Bernard Mbunga Mbusu.

Mr Mutua will appear in court on June 17 for a pre-trial.  He currently remains in custody.
