A second man has been charged with murder after a young father-of-two was gunned down in a brazen public shooting in Sydney‘s west

Emergency services were called to Carinya Street in Blacktown shortly before midday on Friday after reports that shots had been fired.

Police found 28-year-old Mal Seve with wounds to his neck, chest, and leg. He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Police attempted to stop a Mazda ute seen leaving the scene and initiated a pursuit when the vehicle allegedly failed to stop.

The pursuit ended a short time later when the ute crashed less than 1km away on Kildare Road.

Two men – aged 18 and 25 – allegedly exited the vehicle and fled the scene. Both were arrested a short time later.

Police established a crime scene as homicide detectives launched an investigation under Strike Force Depew.

Hoani Tewhare, 18, was charged with murder, taking and driving conveyance without consent and failing to stop during a police pursuit.

Tewhare remains behind bars and will face court in January.

The second man, 25, was taken to hospital with minor injuries under police guard.

He has since been charged with murder, using offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty and breach of bail.

He was refused bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court on Monday.

Police confirmed that the two men charged and Mr Seve were all known to them.

Sydney has experienced more than a dozen public shootings, arson attacks and kidnappings since Christmas 2024, prompting police to set up the 150 officer-strong Taskforce Falcon in May to tackle underworld warfare.

‘Public place shootings and all shootings, police take very seriously – it’s one of our number one priorities,’ Superintendent Brendan Gorman told reporters on Friday.

‘Police will do whatever it takes to end that violence.’
