By CHARLOTTE MCINTYRE FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA

Optus is increasing the price of its monthly mobile phone plans in a huge blow to customers.

Australia’s second-biggest telco will hike up the price of some plans from June 4, 2025.

The telco giant has told customers the reason for the increase is to improve the network and technology to keep Australians connected.

An email to customers revealed some plans will be increased by between $2 and $6 per month.

The price increase covers some of the telco giant’s most popular plans including Choice, Choice Plus and Business Mobile Plus.

This means Australians who are currently paying $52 per month on a Optus Choice Plus plan will pay $55 per month from June.

Optus managing director of customer solutions Anthony Shiner said the telco were ‘committed to helping keep Australians connected and continue to invest in improving the speed, coverage and reliability of our network, as well as enhancing technology, to provide a great experience for our customers’.

‘Any device payments customers are currently paying will remain the same,’ Shiner told Yahoo Finance.

‘Customers whose plans are changing will receive an email or SMS message explaining the changes.’

Customers impacted by the price hikes will also see increases in their data allowances.

Optus announced increases of between 20GB to 40GB per month, depending on the plan.

Device payments through Optus will not change following the price hike.

New customers singing up to the telco giant will pay the higher price going forward.

The changes come less than a year after the company’s last price increase with postpaid phone planes rising by $3 or $6 per service in August, 2024.
