As reported by Asaaseradio on Thursday, November 14, 2024, confrontations between NDC supporters and Asawase Member of Parliament, Muntaka Mubarak, caused the visit of former President John Dramani Mahama to the Wangara chief in the Ashanti Region on Monday, November 11, to take an unexpected turn.

Mahama was in the area to interact with the Zongo villages and pay his respects to the Wangara chief, but his visit quickly turned into the site of a dispute that descended into chaos.

An argument broke out as NDC supporters allegedly prevented MP Muntaka Mubarak, a crucial member of Mahama’s team, from entering the palace.

Senior party leaders, including ex Ashanti Regional Police Commander Kofi Boakye, quickly put an end to the dispute, which almost turned into a violent conflict, by stepping in to diffuse the tension.

Outrage within the opposition National Democratic Congress has been triggered by the episode, which has been extensively shared on social media.

Nasir Gardenboi, the NDC’s communications director for the Asawase Constituency, denounced the disturbance as “disgraceful behaviour” that threatens democratic principles and party unity in a statement issued on Tuesday.

In addition to undermining party unity, Gardenboi said, “The NDC Asawase Constituency categorically condemns this disgraceful behavior as it undermines societal norms of respect and civility.” He further underlined that the incident’s perpetrators would be held accountable.

“We declare that these actions will not be tolerated; Sarki Don Jazzi and Aboabo Rasta are cautioned that they will encounter strong opposition if they attend any NDC function in Asawase,” he continued.

In order to hold those responsible for the disturbance accountable, the NDC has also demanded that the Ghana Police Service launch an investigation right once. The party’s leadership has maintained a strong position, emphasizing that the division of the party would not be accepted. As Mahama continues his engagements in the run-up to the polls, the situation underscores the escalating tensions within the NDC.
