Acclaimed Ghanaian actor, Adjetey Anang, has called on stakeholders in Ghana’s creative arts sector to unite and align with government policies following President John Dramani Mahama’s promises to allocate funds for the industry.

According to him, the government’s announcement of allocations to support the arts is “a breath of fresh air.”

He made the comments during the National Film Dialogue held on September 16, 2025, at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana, under the theme “Accelerating Industry Development.”

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah, Anang acknowledged that the government has generally shown sensitivity to the needs of the creative space.

“The president and his team have always been very sensitive to the creative space, and, therefore, we’re always looking up to what they can do and help this space especially. For me, the news that there’s an allocation or the potential of having that for this space injects a breath of fresh air.

“It’s for us to really align with the policies, with the government’s vision, and also support and make it possible for them to ensure that all their dreams and goals and aspirations for this sector comes to pass,” he said.

He, however, said that while government support is necessary, the sector must not become entirely dependent on it.

He urged arts professionals to strengthen their independent structures in such a way that they can survive any change in political leadership.

“We also need to stand on our own independently, so that whoever comes into power, we can’t still continue with the machinery that has been set up… I think that it also rests on us.

“No matter how the government’s injection would be in this space, if we don’t stand as one, if we do not collaborate on all levels, see eye to eye and bury our hatchets and grievances, we will not be able to thrive as an industry,” he added.

This call comes in the wake of President Mahama’s recent media engagement in which he pledged to provide dedicated funding for the creative arts in the next national budget.

This came after the president cited the creative arts sector as key to job creation and cultural identity.
