The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has officially announced its withdrawal from the upcoming Akwatia by-election, citing respect for the late Member of Parliament for the constituency and growing political instability in the country.

In a statement dated August 11, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Jerry Owusu Appauh, the LPG extended its deepest condolences to the family, constituents, and colleagues of the deceased MP, describing his passing as “a profound loss” to both Akwatia and the nation.

The party said its decision was taken “in recognition of his dedicated service and as a mark of respect,” adding that it stands in solidarity with the community during the mourning period.

The LPG also noted that the prevailing political climate in Ghana calls for “unity, calm, and constructive engagement rather than heightened political contest.”

“With the current political instability in the country, unity and compassion must take precedence over political rivalry,” the statement read. “The LPG stands firmly with the people of Akwatia and with all Ghanaians during this challenging time.”

This move means the Akwatia by-election, already drawing significant attention from major political players, will proceed without the participation of the Liberal Party. Political observers say the decision could shift the dynamics of the contest, potentially consolidating support around the remaining candidates.

The Electoral Commission is expected to proceed with its timeline for the poll despite the withdrawal, though the absence of the LPG may influence voter turnout and campaign strategies.

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the sudden passing of its MP, whose contributions, according to the LPG, will be remembered as a legacy of service and dedication to his people.
