The Chairman of the Ghana Football Association Club Licensing Committee, Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh, has alleged that some Ghanaian clubs forge letters from the National Health Insurance Scheme.

According to him, there have been occasions where clubs present fake information about their players being registered with the NHIS to pass the process, only to be caught during verification checks.

He asserted that local club do not seem to understand the difference between providing medical care and medical insurance, which is problematic when licensing players.

Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh questions timing of sports minister’s press conference on Black Stars budget

“They are supposed to ensure that all their players are insured. They provide medical insurance. I think we still don’t understand the difference between providing medical care to your players and providing medical insurance.

“We said, at the least, make sure that all your players are registered under the National Health Insurance. We can’t get the clubs to do that. To the extent that some clubs even forge letters from the National Health Insurance,” he said during an interview with Sporty FM.

The GFA Club Licensing Committee Chairman narrated how a team was caught in the act, with the matter being probed by the disciplinary committee for action to be taken.

“It’s in the system. Somebody had a letter from the National Health Insurance, from one of the towns. The bottom line is they assume that we won’t even check. Now, we’re asking you to get us a letter from the National Health Insurance, showing that in 2025, all the players are registered. He just took a 2023 letter, blocked out the date, and typed a new date there as National Health Insurance letter.

“Forgery is criminal. So, we’ve referred their conduct to the FA. What do I expect the FA to do? Refer the conduct of the club to the ethics committee of the FA and get somebody banned,” he said.
