The football world is in mourning following the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident in the province of Zamora, Spain, on July 3.

The devastating news, initially reported by Spanish newspaper Marca and quickly shared by outlets including the Daily Mail on X, on July 3, 2025, comes just two weeks after the 28-year-old married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.

Multiple media reports indicate that Jota was traveling with his brother, Andre, who also perished in the incident.

Their vehicle reportedly left the road on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province and was engulfed in flames.

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, widely known as Diogo Jota, was a celebrated Portuguese international, renowned for his clinical finishing, explosive pace, and dribbling ability.

He joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and quickly became a vital player for the Reds, scoring many crucial goals.

Last season, he contributed immensely to the team with nine goals as Liverpool clinched the Premier League title.

The tragic passing of a player in the prime of his career, and so soon after a joyous personal milestone, has sent shockwaves through the global football community.

Tributes have begun pouring in from clubs, teammates, and fans mourning the profound loss. Jota had been in a relationship with Rute Cardoso since 2012, and the couple had three children together.

The authorities in Zamora have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident.

Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
