Former Nigerian captain, Mikel Obi has attributed the struggles of Premier League side Liverpool in the 2025/26 season to the death of Portuguese striker Diogo Jota.

According to him, the bond that existed among the players and the late striker was strong, and his passing has taken a psychological toll on the team, one that will take time to heal.

He acknowledged that although Liverpool started the season well, their sudden dip in form could be linked to the tragic incident that occurred prior to the start of the campaign.

“A massive, massive tragedy [Jota’s death] happened at that football club. A tragedy no one expected. As human beings, as footballers, we spend so much time with our teammates more than we do with our families. It’s something that’s going to affect these players.”

“Because we’re all human beings. It doesn’t matter how well they’re playing. It doesn’t matter how well they started the season. Definitely, it will affect these players. So for me, whatever is happening at the football club, I just think the emotions and feelings are still there,” he said while speaking on the Obi Podcast.

The former Chelsea midfielder also stated that his fellow African, Mohamed Salah, has been deeply affected due to his close relationship with the late Jota, which may explain his recent poor form.

“I heard Salah was very close to Jota. He doesn’t look like himself, he looks like a shadow of his former self. I would be careful and very calm when criticising this Liverpool team. Let’s not forget what happened!”

Liverpool have lost six matches in their last seven games sparking concerns from fans and pundits.
