On September 19, 2009, former striker of Stade Rennes, Asamoah Gyan, etched his name into French football history with one of the fastest goals ever scored in Ligue 1.

Sixteen years on, the league is paying tribute to that unforgettable moment.

On Matchday Six of the 2009/10 season, Rennes hosted Grenoble, and within moments of the kickoff, the ball was already in the back of the net.

Grenoble, attempting to play out from the back, misplaced a pass straight into Rennes’ press.

Within seconds, the ball was worked into the box, where Ismael Bangoura slipped a pass to Gyan.

The Ghanaian forward kept his composure and slotted home to put Rennes 1–0 up.

At the time, it was officially the third-fastest goal in Ligue 1 history.

Today, it still ranks among the 13 quickest ever goals scored in the French top flight.

Rennes did not look back, by the 20th minute, they were 3–0 up, and in the second half, Gyan completed his brace in the 61st minute to seal a 4–0 win.

Gyan went on to finish that season with 13 goals in 29 appearances, cementing his reputation as one of Ligue 1’s most lethal strikers in the season.

It wasn’t the first time Gyan’s goals had made history. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he scored after just 68 seconds against the Czech Republic, setting the record for the fastest goal of that tournament, an achievement that still lives vividly in Ghana’s footballing folklore.

Sixteen years later, Ligue 1 remembers a goal that perfectly captured Gyan’s instinct, timing, and killer touch.
