Leicester City manager Marta Cifuentes has shed light on why Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku was absent from the Black Stars squad during the September international break.

Issahaku was not included in the Ghana squad for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali despite being in top form.

Cifuentes explained that the club opted to prioritise Issahaku’s fitness as he continues to build up after returning from a long-term injury.

“We’re trying to protect Abdul; this break would have been very good for his recovery. He’s gotten better in training and on the pitch since I’ve arrived; he’ll be in optimal condition,” the Leicester coach said.

The 21-year-old missed the majority of last season with an ACL injury but returned at the start of the current campaign in explosive form.

He has already netted two goals in four matches for Leicester in the English Championship, quickly re-establishing himself as one of the side’s brightest attacking outlets.

While Ghana coach Otto Addo will have to wait before reintegrating Issahaku into his plans, Leicester believe a careful approach now will allow the youngster to hit his full stride over the course of the season.
