Over 300 land surveyors from across Ghana will converge in Cape Coast from August 27–29, 2025, for the Annual Conference of the Land Surveying Division (LSD) of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) under the theme “Enhancing Land Surveyors’ Competencies for Sustainable National Development in Ghana.”

The conference comes at a critical time as Ghana intensifies efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and meet the priorities of Vision 2030.

Land surveyors play a central role in supporting national planning, infrastructure development, agriculture, environmental protection, and land governance. However, rapid urbanization, climate challenges, unregulated mining, and rising land disputes demand a modern, responsive surveying profession.

The Chairperson of the Division, Surv. Dr. Tina Wemegah, emphasised the growing need to equip surveyors with advanced skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial data analysis. These, she said, are critical in helping government and regulatory agencies monitor land use, tackle illegal mining, and support sustainable land management.

The Planning Committee Chairman, Surv. Prof. Prosper B. Laari, underscored the alarming rise in fraudulent land transactions and disputes over land ownership.

He stressed that land surveyors must be empowered through legal education and technical training to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of land documentation processes.

According to him, the profession must move beyond boundary demarcation and positioning to become proactive partners in policy, planning, and environmental stewardship.

The conference will also draw attention to the need for institutional partnerships among academia, professional bodies, and government to support continuous professional development. There are strong calls for the modernization of land surveying training curricula to reflect emerging global trends and technologies in the field.T

he event is organised by the Land Surveying Division of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS), the professional body mandated to promote excellence and ethical practice in land surveying. Key institutional partners expected to support the conference include the Licensed Surveyors Association of Ghana and the Survey and Mapping Division of the Lands Commission.

This year’s event, hosted at the Pempamsie Hotel in Cape Coast, marks the first time the Central Region is hosting the LSD conference. It follows a successful rotation pattern through Sunyani, Tamale, and Koforidua in recent years, promoting regional participation and tourism.

Surv. Prof. Laari and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chair, Surv. Christian Quarcoo, recently visited the hotel to assess its readiness. They expressed confidence in the venue’s amenities, including security, parking, and leisure facilities, to support participants’ comfort and well-being.

The three-day event will feature technical presentations, exhibitions, site tours, and networking sessions. As Ghana continues to place land at the center of its development agenda, the 2025 Land Surveyors Conference seeks to position surveyors as indispensable contributors to national progress through innovation, accuracy, and professional integrity.
