Renowned Pan-Africanist and affiliate of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has exposed concerning attempts by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to undermine Ghana’s Non-Aligned foreign policy – a cornerstone principle established by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

In a blistering exposé published in The Insight newspaper on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the veteran journalist warned against Zelensky’s desperate attempts to export Ukraine’s geopolitical conflicts to Ghana.

This development comes amid reports that the Sahel States Alliance (AES) has designated Ukraine as a terrorist state, suggesting Zelensky’s statements may be a deliberate ploy to poison relations between Ghana and the AES bloc.

“Unfortunately for Ghanaians, Zelensky has chosen Ghana as one of his export destinations to sow seeds of mistrust and undermine the Non-Aligned foreign policy advocated by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah,” Pratt stated.

The journalist added that Zelensky had initiated a call to President John Dramani Mahama, ostensibly to discuss projects previously agreed with former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“President Mahama has consistently advocated for negotiated settlements in both the Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Palestine conflicts, unlike his predecessor who openly sided with Ukraine and Israel.

“Yet Zelensky chose to publicly characterize their private discussion on his X platform in misleading terms,” he noted.

The situation escalated when the Ukrainian Embassy in Accra enthusiastically amplified Zelensky’s post, which claimed; “Ghana is ready to finance our drone production, and we are ready to help our partners secure their borders.”

Pratt questioned the logic of Ghana financing Ukrainian weapons production while struggling with a $3.7 billion power sector debt and implementing austerity measures, including canceling fuel allowances for government officials.

Regrettably, many Ghanaian media outlets amplified these claims without proper verification.

Notably, none of the publications reporting on “Ghana’s funding for drone production” sought clarification from the Office of the President – raising serious concerns about journalistic due diligence and potential external influence in Ghana’s media landscape.

“More alarming is Ukraine’s offer to ‘help secure Ghana’s borders,'” Pratt continued. “From whom? Our security concerns stem from terrorist elements that Ukraine itself supports in the Sahel region. How can our neighbors in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger trust us if we’re financing the very drones used against them?”

The veteran analyst dismissed Ukraine’s proposal for agricultural cooperation as disingenuous, noting that a nation dependent on $280 billion in foreign aid (including $199.6 billion in U.S. military support) lacks the capacity to solve Ghana’s challenges.

“Zelensky must be stopped from exporting Ukraine’s chaos to Ghana. His government’s support for Sahel terrorists has already caused enough problems for our region. Ghana must remain steadfast in its Non-Aligned principles and resist being drawn into foreign conflicts that don’t serve our national interests,” he added.
