Due to his involvement in the number 12 exposé, former GFA boss Kwesi Nyanyakyi has been released from the High Court’s continuing trial.

This comes after Anas Aremeyaw Anas, a crucial witness in the case against Kwasi Nyantakyi, was not called by the prosecution. For his activities captured on camera in the investigative piece, Kwesi Nyantakyi has gone on trial for both fraud and corruption and conspiracy to commit fraud and corruption.

Allegedly corrupt practices in the continent’s football industry were exposed by the number 12 exposé. One of the expose’s victims, Kwasi Nyantakyi, was caught accepting cash from an undercover journalist who pretended to be a businessman.

In the video, Kwasi Nyantakyi was heard pledging to support the businessman’s ventures and outlining plans to take advantage of his relationships with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Additionally, he was charged with accepting bribes to help pick players for the Ghanaian national team.

However, the trial has been postponed because of disputes over whether Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the expose’s author, who usually wears a mask while speaking in public, should be required to testify wearing or not wearing the mask.

Kwasi Nyantakyi and his attorneys wanted Anas to testify without a mask, but Anas had indicated that he should do so while wearing one. In response to a motion on the subject, the High Court requested that Anas first unmask in chambers to Kwasi Nyantakyi before testifying in public while wearing a mask. However, in a unanimous ruling, the court of appeals ordered Anas to testify without the mask.

However, because they were unable to bring Anas to testify, state prosecutors asked for a month’s adjournment when the case was called on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in order to consult with the Attorney General. Kwasi Nyantakyi’s attorneys petitioned the court to drop the accusations against the defendant because they were not prosecuted.

Thus, the Kwasi Nyantakyi was released by the judge.
