Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has urged for calm following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He acknowledged that many Ghanaians are disappointed by the team’s poor performance but encouraged them to continue supporting the team through these challenging times.

As the former first vice president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Nyantakyi also advised the GFA and the technical team to address the team’s issues before they escalate.

During an interview with Kumasi-based Lawson FM, Nyantakyi recommended that the coaching staff select players who are more dedicated and committed, particularly for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March 2025.

“I don’t believe all hope is lost, but we must take action. We have World Cup qualifiers in March [2025] against Chad and Madagascar, and I am confident that the right players need to be called up for these matches.

“It shouldn’t be the usual selections, but players who are prepared and committed to representing the country and the team,” he emphasised.

Otto Addo and his players have faced significant scrutiny for their inability to secure a spot for the Black Stars in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

Ghana lost three, drew three, and won none of their six matches in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The team ended at the bottom of Group F with only three points, while Sudan and Angola advanced from the group.

This marks the first time in 20 years that the Black Stars have missed qualification for the AFCON.

The GFA has not yet announced a final decision on whether to disband or retain the Black Stars‘ technical team.
