The assistant coach of Sudan, Ignatius Osei-Fosu, has disclosed that head coach James Kwasi Appiah vowed to qualify Sudan for the 2026 World Cup.

He noted that during the meeting to sign the official documents for the contract, there was no clause about the 2026 World Cup qualification; however, his boss made a vow.

Osei-Fosu stated that Kwasi Appiah made a promise to the Sudanese officials that he would qualify the team for the upcoming World Cup, even though the task seems dicey considering the strength of the team.

“The day we went to sign the contract, it was a Monday, and I remember clearly that there was nothing about the World Cup in the contract, but Kwasi Appiah voluntarily said it.

“Kwasi Appiah said he would qualify the team for the World Cup, and everybody in the room was quiet. I asked him if he was only saying it for the moment, but he said he meant everything he said because he has qualified a team for the World Cup before,” he is quoted by happyghana.com.

Osei-Fosu and Kwasi Appiah led war-torn Sudan to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 16 years.

Appiah’s men will be hoping to make more history by qualifying the team for the 2026 World Cup to enhance their record and coaching legacy.
