Former head coach of Ghana, James Kwasi Appiah, has not ruled out a return to the Ghana national team despite being relieved of the job twice.

Appiah first served as the team’s head coach from 2012 to 2014, becoming the first Ghanaian coach to qualify Ghana for the World Cup. He returned for a second stint between 2017 and 2020.

Now coaching Sudan, the 64-year-old recently faced his former team, Ghana, in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, securing a vital win and qualifying Sudan for the 2025 AFCON. With the future of Ghana’s current coach, Otto Addo, uncertain, some fans have called for Appiah’s return.

During an interview with Asempa FM, Appiah was asked if he would consider returning to coach Ghana. The current Head of Sporting Affairs for Asante Kotoko kept the possibility open, stating that the future is unpredictable.

“You have to be professional. Whether you would do it or not, you have to keep it in mind because you never know what will happen. At the moment, I have a contract with Sudan, and I am working with them. As a professional, you don’t jump to conclusions because you never know what the future holds,” he said.

Appiah’s tenure with Ghana included a fourth-place finish in the 2012 and 2013 AFCON tournaments. However, he also faced setbacks, with a group-stage exit at the 2014 World Cup and a Round of 16 exit at the 2019 AFCON.
