Private legal practitioner, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has outlined 10 measures he believes will help eliminate the trend of politicians trying to shield suspects from prosecution and accountability.

According to him, the fight against corruption, despite efforts by past governments, hasn’t yielded significant results, stating that in the end, individuals who loot state assets often get away with their crimes.

NDC has become a party of intellectuals – Asiedu Nketiah

The good governance advocate attributed this to ‘backroom deals’ among politicians to protect suspects.

Reacting to the revelation by the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, about some party members trying to cut deals with individuals being prosecuted by the state, Kwaku Azar, as he is affectionately known, proposed that the fight against corruption be aligned with the nation’s interest.

He explained that the fight, particularly Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), must be a national effort rather than a partisan one to succeed.

“Align with National Interest – Stopping backroom deals must be framed as a national duty, not a partisan fight. ORAL is, after all, about protecting our democracy and rule of law, not defending friends, financiers, or comrades,” he posted on Facebook on September 7, 2025.

Additionally, the seasoned lawyer proposed a ‘name and shame’ approach, which he said would help eliminate the recurring practice of secret deals-cutting.

“Name and Shame – Publicly and expeditiously expose anyone attempting to broker deals for looters. No more we see you but we won’t expose you. Zero tolerance for those who choose looters over the people,” he continued.

Kwaku Azar also emphasised the need for a transparent prosecution process, including prosecuting individuals who engage in deal-cutting to shield suspects, among other measures.
