The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante-Boateng, has refuted claims that he made derogatory comments about former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during a recent interview on Adom TV’s Badwam programme.

In a statement issued on Friday October 31, 2025, the MP described the reports circulating on social and traditional media as a “calculated and shameful attempt” to twist his words and inject religion and ethnicity into what he insists was a purely political discussion about loyalty, service and merit within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Asante-Boateng explained that his comments on Badwam, aired last Wednesday, were rooted in an analogy drawn from Asante chieftaincy traditions to illustrate how leadership in the NPP is earned through dedication and long-term service to the party.

According to him, his reference to Dr Bawumia’s early involvement in the NPP was “strictly contextual” and aimed at explaining the circumstances surrounding the former Vice President’s nomination as the party’s running mate in 2008.

“At the time of his nomination, Dr Bawumia was relatively new to the party’s internal structures and was described as a ‘stranger’ only in the sense that he had limited prior involvement in the grassroots operations of the NPP,” he clarified.

“Despite this, the party entrusted him with a position of immense responsibility a great honour and privilege, even though many long-serving members were equally qualified.”

The Asante Akim South MP categorically denied claims that he described Dr Bawumia as a “slave” in the party, calling such allegations “false, dishonest and a gross distortion” of his intent.

“At no point did I use, imply, or endorse such language. The interview is public and available on YouTube for anyone who seeks the truth,” he stated.

He stressed that his comments were never directed at Dr Bawumia’s person, ethnicity or religion but rather at broader issues of loyalty and recognition within the NPP.

Asante-Boateng also emphasised that his remarks did not in any way diminish the contributions of Northerners within the NPP.

He cited several distinguished party members from the North who have served with dedication over the years, including Ambrose Dery, Malik Alhassan Yakubu, Hajia Alima Mahama and the late M.N.D. Jawula, among others.

He said these individuals “earned respect through years of loyalty and sacrifice,” and any attempt to frame his comments as ethnically charged was “malicious and dangerously divisive.”

The MP expressed disappointment that some respected individuals, including journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, repeated the false claims without verifying the full context of his comments.

He also criticized the NPP General Secretary for issuing a statement based on what he described as misleading interpretations.

“It is equally unfortunate that the NPP General Secretary was misled to issue a statement based on this same distortion,” he lamented.
