Okwahu United Football Club, have held a pivotal first-ever supporters congress to outline key strategies for the upcoming season, with a strong focus on securing promotion to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) after nearly two decades in the lower divisions.

Affectionately nicknamed Asaase Aban… Yente Gyae, a proud traditional club of the Kwahu Traditional Council (KTC), the team have demonstrated noteworthy performance in the past three seasons, securing second and third spots in the Access Bank Division One League- Zone-Three.

They have provided a beacon of hope that with a slight push, promotion to the top-tier league is within reach.

It was revealed at the landmark supporters’ congress convened by the club and its stakeholders that, Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Council and principal bankroller of Okwahu United, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, released a substantial undisclosed amount to enable the team to resume camping for the new season campaign.

Addressing supporters, he urged Kwahu natives, particularly high-profile business leaders across the country, to rally behind the club with financial and logistical support as a motivation to get the best out of the playing body.

Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III urged stakeholders to help raise an expanded target of GH₵1 million for the upcoming season to cover player welfare, logistics, infrastructure needs, and an intensified drive for top-flight return.

“Our beloved club was relegated 19 years ago, and as we approach the 20th anniversary of that painful exit in 2006, we must unite to ensure its return to the top-flight league. Football is now a business and we need money to make Okwahu United great again. I appeal to all natives of Kwahu and stakeholders alike to help raise an additional GH₵1 million to strengthen the squad and improve operations ahead of the new strategic plan to bring us back to glory,” he said.

    New supporters’ constitution

Prior to the Congress, a five-member committee was charged with the mandate to draft a working document to serve as the guide for the Okwahu United Supporters Union.

At the Congress, the five-member committee presented the carefully drafted supporters’ code, which, after review, was adopted as the new constitution for the Okwahu United Supporters Union.

Among the constitutional changes was a fresh identity for the club’s many supporters’ groups: each will now be referred to as a “Mountains,” with Nkawkaw Supporters Union renamed ‘Mountain One’ and the Accra supporters’ group designated ‘Mountain Two’ with Kumasi as ‘Mountain Three’, an organisational change meant to strengthen unity and rally local and diaspora fans under a shared banner.

    Supporters insurance package introduced

In a pioneering move to protect fans, Okwahu United has signed a partnership agreement with NSIA Insurance Company Limited to introduce a dedicated insurance package for club supporters.

The scheme, prompted by a tragic accident last season that claimed two supporters returning from a match, will provide cover for motor accidents and other unfortunate incidents at sporting venues.

The club is believed to be the first in the country to offer such an insurance package expressly for its supporters, underlining Okwahu United’s commitment to fan welfare.

Touching on the insurance package, Daasebre said, “We did this insurance for the loyal fans, be it travels to and fro game venues, incidents in the stadium, or celebrations back home after securing glory, it will protect you against unforeseen circumstances. I urge all supporters to join one of the mountains based on their location, register for the insurance and be active so that in times of challenge, the individual will be taken care of.”

    Stadium woes and financial struggles

Despite the optimism and momentum building around the team, the club faces significant challenges, including the lack of a standard home stadium.

Okwahu United currently lacks a standard home stadium and is forced to stage home matches in the regional capital, Koforidua Sports Stadium, which distances the team from its home supporters.

The Nkawkaw Sports Stadium project, slated to become the club’s permanent home and overseen by the National Sports Authority (NSA), has stalled for years with little progress.

Former Agriculture Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi Constituency, Bryan Acheampong, pledged to reconstruct the Nkawkaw stadium for the club, but an impasse with the NSA has been a stumbling block since the beginning of the year.

General Manager of the Club, Nana Kwame Dankwah, has appealed to the National Sports Authority to resolve outstanding misunderstandings with Bryan Acheampong, to expedite reconstruction of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium and restore true home advantage for Okwahu United.

On the playing side, Nana Kwame Dankwah confirmed that the squad will be strengthened ahead of the new season.

“Kumasi Asante Kotoko has offered six players to Okwahu United, Hearts of Oak has contributed five, and Bechem United has provided one striker—reinforcements that provide a timely boost to the club’s promotion ambitions,” he said.

Nana Oduro Nyarko, Administrative Manager of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) and the first-ever General Secretary of Okwahu United, addressed the team and supporters with a stirring reminder of the club’s heritage.

He traced the club’s history from its founding in 1975 through its proud moments in the 1990s, noting Okwahu United’s resilience as the first team to be relegated and then immediately return the following season.

He encouraged current players to draw confidence from that strong foundation and deep history, and to give their best as the club prepares to mark two decades since relegation from the Ghana Premier League.

Okwahu United’s leadership said the combination of newly mobilised funds, organised supporter structures, insurance protection for fans, incoming player reinforcements, and appeals to stakeholders and authorities represents a comprehensive strategy to restore the club to Ghana’s top flight.

The congress was attended by traditional rulers and nananom of KTC, corporate bodies in Kwahu, natives, representatives of NSIA Insurance, supporters and other stakeholders.
