Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Kwabena Dodzi has questioned the timing of head coach Karim Zito’s departure from Asante Kotoko, describing the situation as a major setback for the club.

Zito stepped down just days before Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League clash against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, leaving assistant coach Prince Yaw Owusu to take temporary charge of the team.

The highly anticipated encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium ended in a 1-0 victory for Hearts of Oak, bringing an end to their long-standing winless streak against the Porcupine Warriors.

Defender Baba Adamu proved to be the difference-maker, netting the decisive goal to secure maximum points for the Phobians in a spirited performance.

Reacting to the development, Dodzi expressed concern over Kotoko’s preparedness heading into such a crucial fixture without a substantive head coach.

“It baffles me that Kotoko played the Hearts game without a substantive coach. Zito’s exit is a big concern. It’s no surprise that Hearts of Oak came out on top; they delivered a top-class performance,” he told Kessben FM.

“Kotoko lacked motivation playing without a coach. For me, the players could have performed much better if they had proper guidance,” he added.

Kotoko will now shift focus to their Matchday 23 clash against Young Apostles, where victory will be crucial to keeping their Ghana Premier League title hopes alive.

Currently, the Porcupine Warriors sit fifth on the league table with 35 points, nine adrift of leaders Medeama SC, as pressure continues to mount on the club’s technical direction.
