Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s presidential primary, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

He becomes the first candidate to submit his forms as the NPP prepares to select its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

His filing comes against the backdrop of major reforms to the party’s electoral process, including the expansion of the voter register to capture a broader range of stakeholders.

According to a statement issued by the Presidential Elections Committee on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the new categories of eligible delegates include former executives, ministers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) leaders, and external branch officials. These groups will now have a say in electing the party’s next flagbearer.

Meanwhile, other leading contenders, including former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Bosomtwe MP Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, are expected to file their nominations in the coming days.
