President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has described the eight Ghanaians who died in the August 6 helicopter crash as “heroes who died in the line of national duty.”

Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Jubilee House on Thursday, the GFA president said the football fraternity joins the nation in mourning the tragic loss.

“On behalf of the Football Association and the football community, we express our sincere condolences to the President of our Republic, the Government, the people of Ghana, and the families of the eight outstanding departed Ghanaians. We join a grieving nation in mourning.

“We fondly remember Dr Edward Omane Boamah, who served sports and football diligently as a Deputy Minister of Sports. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Their memory will forever be cherished,” Okraku said.

The victims included Defence Minister and former Deputy Sports Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, NDC vice chairman Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye and crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sgt Ernest Addo Mensah.

Okraku will lead the football fraternity to the state funeral at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.
