Former Presidents of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did not partake in the 2026 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Primaries, which took place on January 31, 2026.

The two prominent personalities were expected to cast their ballots at the NPP National Headquarters in Accra, but neither was seen at the center.

There has been no official communication from the camps of the former presidents regarding the reasons for their absence.

NPP Primary: The men who have more to lose than the contenders

This comes as a big surprise to some party executives and members, as the participation of these two figures was highly anticipated to demonstrate support for the party.

The party has yet to comment on the absence of former presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo or the circumstances that contributed to it.

Meanwhile, sorting and counting of ballot papers has officially begun for the 2026 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

This comes as voting officially ended at 2pm on Saturday, January 31, 2026, as an estimated 211,000 members from the party’s constituencies cast their votes at over 300 polling centres nationwide.

The primaries were mostly peaceful across all voting centers observed, with tight security recorded throughout.

The primaries saw the five heavyweight contenders, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, see strong turnout from party delegates eager to choose their flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
