In a groundbreaking move, Hon. Edem Kofi Kpotosu, Member of Parliament for Ho Central Constituency, has donated legislative materials to the Volta Regional Library, marking a significant step in bridging the gap between lawmakers and the public. The event, themed “Bridging the Gap Between the Law Makers and Users of the Laws,” aimed to promote access to legal knowledge and encourage citizen participation in governance.

According to the Ho Central MP, “Today we Assembly for something profoundly significant. We’re here to bridge a divide. The records am presenting are beyond mere written pages. We’re are bringing the house directly to you, here on these shelves. So anyone can follow the paths of our nations legislation.” Kpotosu continues by saying “Knowledge must not be confined. Let these books be a written invitation to read. May these pages kindle discussions. May they remind us that governance is not for a few. The bridge is built. Walk accross it.”

According to the Volta and Oti Regional Secretary of the Ghana Bar Association, Andrews Dodzi Adugu, the donation is a first-of-its-kind gesture by an MP in Ghana. “We the Ghana Bar Association are very excited about this gesture. This is the first MP in Ghana to donate law books to a library,” he stated. The event highlighted the importance of access to legal information and the need for citizens to engage with lawmakers. As Adugu noted, “It’s important to keep the populace updated on new legal developments.” The Ghana Bar Association has pledged to work with the MP to ensure that the views of the public are taken into account in the law-making process.

The MP’s initiative has been lauded by the Municipal Chief Executive, Stephen Adom who praised Kpotosu for his efforts in developing the municipality. “We’re working and will continue to work to develop our Municipality,” the MCE said. The Regional Director of the Volta Regional Library Authority, Bright Ofori, expressed appreciation for the donation and urged the library to be assisted in converting the materials into other readable formats, such as braille, in line with the Marekuesh Treaty.

We call on the government and all relevant authorities to take note of the Volta Regional Library’s plea for assistance in completing the library complex building, a facility that has been long overdue. The completion of this project will provide a conducive environment for citizens to access the wealth of knowledge and information that Kpotosu’s donation has made possible.
