Award-winning Ghanaian gospel musician, Kofi Owusu Peprah, has revealed that before establishing himself as a household name in gospel music, he served as a backing vocalist for celebrated gospel star Joe Mettle in 2018.

Speaking about his early career, Peprah recounted the sacrifices he made in order to be part of Mettle’s team, including saving money from his modest earnings to cover transportation.

“I remember I had to save money just to buy flight tickets from Kumasi to Accra for rehearsals,” he said, reflecting on the determination that shaped his musical journey.

The “Matwen” hitmaker also shared how his passion for music often clashed with his academic life at the time.

“There was a time I was writing a paper, but I abandoned the paper to attend rehearsals,” he disclosed, stressing how his devotion to music sometimes came at personal cost.

On 17th August 2025, during the Kofi Owusu Peprah Live concert held at the Cedar Assemblies of God Church, the gospel star took time to celebrate Joe Mettle for the role he played in his early career.

He described the VGMA-winning singer as a source of encouragement and a key influence in his growth as a musician.

Kofi Owusu Peprah, son of the late gospel legend Rev. George Owusu Mensah (popularly known as ROPS), has since risen to become one of Ghana’s most impactful gospel voices, known for spirit-filled songs and powerful live ministrations.

His revelation about working under Joe Mettle not only reflects his humble beginnings but also highlights the mentorship and collaborations that have contributed to shaping the gospel music industry in Ghana.
