The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has urged the Black Stars technical team to ensure that call-ups for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are based strictly on merit.

He stressed that Ghana’s ambition is not merely to appear at the tournament but to make a meaningful impact, and that requires selecting the best available Ghanaian players, whether at home or abroad.

Citing the need for fairness and excellence in selection, Kofi Adams called for performance-based call-ups.

“Good and great players should not be left out anywhere they find themselves, whether they are local or foreign,” he said.

He continued by reaffirming the nation’s intentions for the tournament.

“We are not going for this World Cup just to participate and come home. That’s why we must assemble our best,” he added.

The Buem MP also highlighted the growing concern over the steady departure of top talents from the Ghana Premier League.

“If all we do is allow our best local players to leave at the first opportunity, then we cannot build a strong local base. We must be intentional about keeping good and skillful players here too,” he said.

He further disclosed his resolve to expand government support to other sporting disciplines, aiming to reduce the heavy overreliance on football.

“We will support all sports, not only football. But football is really expensive and brings a lot of pressure on every minister, so we will do our best to improve the local league so we can produce players who will excel,” he added.
