The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams has stated that he does not support the idea of the government sponsoring Ghanaian fans to support the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup.

According to him, there are numerous challenges in the sporting sector that need to be addressed, with a major one being the infrastructural deficit hampering progress in some areas.

He noted that he would not make such a recommendation to the government, and no plans are currently in place. He therefore urged interested individuals to be prepared to fund their own trips.

“So far, the government has not given any indication of sending supporters to the World Cup. I don’t think it is something I would recommend. We are in a period where we need money for infrastructure, so why would we sponsor supporters all the way to America when that money could build five multipurpose facilities in some communities? Anyone who wants to go should find their own resources to facilitate their travel documents and go,” he said in Twi during an interview with Peace FM.

However, the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency suggested that the government could partner with private entities to generate funds from corporate sources to support such trips.

“We should come together as public and private sectors to mobilise funds from corporate bodies, that is fine. But for the government to include it in the budget and fund the trip is not a good idea. So far, the finance minister’s budget we are working on covers the cost of the team’s appearance and preparations, and there is no component for supporters,” he clarified.

This comes amid concerns over whether the government will sponsor fans to the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as previous tournaments generated controversy regarding finances.
