The 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic is shaping up nicely, with all signs pointing to a National Democratic Congress majority in the house.

Early results indicate that not only did the NDC enjoy the scalp of some NPP MPs, but they also flipped some constituencies that have historically been the preserve of the NPP.

The shockingly embarrassing performance in the 2024 election has seen some of their experienced and hitherto untouchable MPs lose their seats in a manner no one imagined would happen.

GhanaWeb brings you a list of popular MPs or seats that previously belonged to the NPP but have now flipped to the NDC.

    KT Hammond

Kwabena Tahir Hammond, the experienced Member of Parliament for Adansi-Asokwa, will not be part of the ninth parliament.

KT Hammond, the long-serving MP, lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, who secured 14,229 of the valid votes cast, while KT Hammond garnered 13,275 votes.

    Egyapa Mercer

Aside from the Sekondi constituency being predominantly an NPP stronghold, Egyapa Mercer has been one of the popular faces of the Akufo-Addo administration.

It was therefore shocking when it emerged that Egyapa Mercer lost to Blay Nyameke Armah of the NDC.

Blay Armah secured 14,558 votes, representing 56.40% of the total valid votes, while Egyapa Mercer, who represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the valid votes cast.

    Farouk Mahama

The Member of Parliament for the Yendi Constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Farouk Aliu Mahama, has lost his seat to the candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC’s Abdul Fatawu Alhassan won the seat with 30,707 votes, while the NPP polled 29,819 votes.

    Henry Quartey

Henry Quartey, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso Central constituency, has lost his seat to Abdul-Rauf Tubazu of the National Democratic Congress.

According to the EC official, Henry Quartey polled 23,345 votes, while Abdul-Rauf garnered 29,755 votes.

    Andy Appiah Kubi

The independent parliamentary candidate for the Asante Akyem North constituency, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, won the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Ohene garnered a whopping 26,926 votes, beating the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP and candidate Andy Appiah-Kubi, who received 8,933 votes.

    Dr. Prince Armah

The Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has lost his seat to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Philip Fiifi Buckman.

Dr. Armah, who also serves as the Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, garnered 13,317 votes, falling short of Mr. Buckman’s 15,927 votes. An independent parliamentary candidate in the constituency secured 1,835 votes.

    Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has lost her seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Rev. Kwaku Addo.

Rev. Kwaku Addo secured 31,866 valid votes, while Ursula, who also serves as the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, garnered 26,575 valid votes.

    Ophelia Mensah

Ophelia Mensah, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Mfantseman Constituency, has lost her seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

She polled 24,099 votes, losing the seat to Dr. Prince Ebenezer Arhin of the NDC, who secured 36,989 votes.

    Mireku Duker

The incumbent Member of Parliament for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency, George Mireku Duker, has lost his seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Sheikh Issah Salifu Taylor.

According to provisional results from all 263 polling stations, the MP-elect garnered 35,906 votes, representing 47.11%, while Mireku Duker secured 27,404 votes, translating to 35.96%.

    John Peter Amewu

The NPP lost their only constituency in the Volta Region, with John Peter Amewu falling to Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo of the NDC.

    Sylvester Tetteh

Sylvester Tetteh, the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, lost to the NDC’s Okle Felix Akwetey, polling 27,888 votes, while the NDC candidate managed 37,473 votes.

    Bernard Okoe-Boye

Benjamin Nartey Ayiku, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku constituency, beat Bernard Okoe-Boye, the Health Minister, to retain his seat.
