The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced plans to introduce Saturday and Sunday street businesses in the Central Business District (CBD) of Adum to boost economic activities ahead of the 2025 Christmas festivities.

The move is aimed at creating a structured space for traders to operate and meet increased customer demand during the festive season.

According to the KMA, specific streets within the business centre will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic on weekends to make way for trading activities.

This initiative will allow traders to display their goods freely and safely and enable shoppers to patronise the CBD without the usual weekday congestion.

Despite the move, the assembly has emphasised that the ban on trading on pavements and road medians remains strictly in force.

The MCE, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, warned that any trader who flouts this directive will face strict sanctions.

The enforcement forms part of efforts to maintain order and protect pedestrian access.

Speaking on Otec FM’s morning show Nyansapo, hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Ofori Agyeman Boadi explained that the decision is a strategic effort to decongest the city.

He noted that during Christmas, traders often spill onto roads, creating both traffic and pedestrian challenges.

He further added that the weekend initiative is targeted at workers who are often unavailable to shop on weekdays.

“Saturdays and Sundays are a traditional part of the weekend, a time when many people have the day off and are looking for leisure activities like shopping,” the MCE said, expressing hope that the measure will support both traders and shoppers during the festive rush.
