Popular Ghanaian rapper King Paluta has pushed back against recent claims that most musicians in Ghana are struggling financially.

His response follows comments made by veteran highlife musician and GHAMRO board Chairman, Rex Omar, that about 97% of Ghanaian musicians are not making money from their craft.

Touching on this, Paluta has argued that the country’s creative industries remain structurally unprepared to support artistes financially.

King Paluta further took to X to dispute the portrayal of the industry in such a manner, insisting that music has been financially rewarding for many artistes, including himself.

“I really don’t understand this. Of course I am making money… Why are we making it look like the game hasn’t been good to us? I still no dey barb. Who are the 99%? People are listening to you, and you are not making money? Ano dey barb,” he wrote in English and Pidgin.

Paluta’s comments add to ongoing discussions about the state of Ghana’s music industry and how artistes benefit from their work.

Over the years, many musicians have lamented poor royalty systems and low streaming revenues, leading to calls for stronger government and institutional support to improve structures for artistes.
